Mntendere Car Company
Mntendere Villiage, Malawi Africa
You will not travel far down the dusty roads of Malawi before you come across a group of boys playing with their hand made galimoto (car).
Expertly crafted by forming bent coat hangers, small strands of copper wire and guided by a stick and wheels that turn left and right, they drive these marvelously made cars and trucks for hours at a time.
No visitor to Malawi is complete if they return home without contracting one of these young "Henry Fords" to build them a fine driving machine.
The galimoto car is a feat of childhood ingenuity. It usually features a working trunk lid, engine hood, steering, dual headlights, and suspension! A truck is capable of carrying a loaf of bread or a cold coke back from the local PTC store, and if you have purchased a bus, the young engineer will assure you that it can carry an imaginary group of 17 people from Lilongwe to Blantyre on highway M-1.
